Doing Your Part in the Classroom

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

For many moms the idea of driving up to a big scary elementary school and dropping off their child for kindergarten can be pretty frightening. And in preparing for kindergarten, getting your child ready for that moment of separation can be one of the most difficult things to do. That is why a great option for a lot of moms is not to completely separate from the child in their first weeks of kindergarten but to be an active parent and get involved volunteering at the school even in the summer before kindergarten gets underway.Kindergarten teachers are notoriously under funded and often depend heavily on the help of parents both to get ready for the school year and during the year to serve as

Regulating Self through Private Speech

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Has one ever stopped to think that if private speech helps with self-regulation, that it should also show a relation in the way that a child behaves while performing a variety of tasks? Often it has been found that the more a child is exposed to private speech the less likely they are to perform well on other tasks put before them. It has been noted that some children are so skilled in putting together puzzles together and picture matching that acquisition of knowledge one needed came automatic. Other children may have failed tremendously, because of it being so difficult to comprehend. In neither of these cases would self- guiding nor private speech be intermitted. If every time a child faces a task to hard to handle, private speech is encouraged, than the child is more prone to failure. Ever now and then you will notice a child talking to one self or perhaps squirming in their seats. One may notice a lower scoring on homework assignments test and achievement. Though one may find this possible, one may also find a gain in math achievement among certain age groups. First graders are most likely to be achieving second grade math skills. This can be noticed among those children that talked squirmed and grasped to succeed.More audible gestures may have been noticed, when there was a lack of nonverbal techniques. This may include counting ones fingers to solve a math problem or tracing an article using a pencil. If a child often used private speech, one may tend to notice the child rarely becoming fidgeted and quiet attentive. Children often progressed from audible to inner speech. This is where a child was given the ability to control their motor skills and learn how to focus their attention. Private speech and behavior task management work hand in hand. Often children are tested with a parent in solving problems together. If the parent has a warm and nourishing response toward the child, one would notice a great control within the child being able to control the task put before him/her. It has been found that children with reliable mothers were often seen using self-guidance private speech. Anytime a child takes on a new task they need a supportive parent, which will be able to encourage them and praise their progress. Haven

Camping with Kids

Monday, August 30th, 2010

I remember the days of camping before children. Grab a bag of clothes, sleeping bag and tent, and make a quick stop at the store for some food. My friends and I could plan a camping trip in fifteen minutes and be out the door a half hour later. Camping with kids is a whole different ballgame. Most of the friends I know that camp with their kids have a trailer to sleep in. They have found that this is the easiest route to take. Turning on a generator to run your blow dryer is not my idea of camping. So how can you

Powerful Instrument in Private Speech for Self Regulating

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

-Private Voice- a powerful instrument in self-regulationSelf-regulation means development of the self of an individual by exercising self-control and modifying the self of an individual. One must be open to changes and must adapt to the changes in the environment of the individual. Self of the individual is the guide and philosopher and watch the every close movement and are its silent observer at times. Self-regulation is very necessary and aids in the building of a child. Private speech is the method of talking aloud, giving voice to the hidden and the real emotions of the people. Words and speech since times of yore have been given emphasis. Words have force and might so one must be careful of his or her speech as it has the power of hurting others. The words once said cannot be taken back, so an individual must always be careful of what he says. If the private speech of an individual is in effective the chances of its marring the self-regulation is very high. If the private speech of the child is irrelevant, the chances of the child progressing are negligible; they hardly engage themselves in the goal-oriented tasks and are a complete nuisance for the class. Their social skills are shoddily affected. Inner voice aids in the development of the self as it enables an individual to realize the true and the real self and uniting with the self. Inner voice enables an individual to realize the hidden potential and the inherent capabilities of an individual. Private speech is the verbal expression of our desires and pent up emotions. Thinking aloud, commonly known as private speech is necessary for our early learning and building of our character. While we are children, the private speech is personalized, but as we grow this private speech takes the shape of the communication with other people. The importance of private speech cannot be sidelined as even when we grow up at times we feel the need of communicating privately. For instances, when an individual is going through the bad phase or some demanding situation crops up it is necessary to interact and the there is resurfacing of the private speech. Private speech is the voice of our gestures and thought process. Private speech aids an individual to understanding of the self.Private speech aids in learning and it includes scheduling, scrutinizing and guiding our actions and gestures. The more we strain our brain; the better is its output. Learning through private speech includes four steps, namely learning by rote the words, which help in building your vocabulary. The other application is the ability to understand and dramatize poetry. The next being the capability of reading the texts loud and editing the papers. The last application is to try and reach out to some solution through a math problem. It is always better to pent out the within emotions for better self-regulation. As if an individual have some grudges and rancor, the development of the self would be hampered as then the negativity inculcates within. Private speech even at times can reduce our performance as we only give voice to what we experience for the first time and are puzzling or challenging and fail to give voice to what we already know. Private talking aids in the relieving the negative and downbeat thought of an individual. An individual must ensure that there are no excommunicated emotions or feelings for anybody. The person must be courageous enough to face the challenge and give voice to true self of the individual. This makes the self free from any guilt and helps in its building.

Insomnia - The Most Prevalent Form of Sleep Disorder

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Insomnia, a most common sleep disorder, affects about one third of the American population and is classified two different ways. It can be classified by how long it lasts. Transient insomnia lasts for only a few days, short term lasts for a few weeks and chronic lasts for more then three weeks. The other way insomnia is classified is by its source. The main two classifications of this sleep disorder by source are primary and secondary.Transient insomnia is experienced by most people at some time throughout their lives. It can be caused by stress such as worrying about the first day school or an illness in the family. Sometimes this sleep disorder occurs due to a disruption of their circadian cycle, which is a persons natural sleep cycle, caused by jet lag or a shift change at work. Transient insomnia goes away one the stress issue has passed. Short term insomnia is often caused by similar stressors as transient insomnia. If the sufferer of this sleep disorder cannot break the cycle of poor sleep, it often develops into chronic insomnia. Primary insomnia develops without any obvious cause. Sometimes it starts as early as infancy.Often it is the result of high metabolic rates or an overactive nervous system. Secondary insomnia is the direct result of another cause. This sleep disorder can come from illness, medication, drugs or alcohol. Addressing the underlying cause of secondary insomnia often gives the sufferer relief. For example, if arthritis pain keeps you from sleeping, then treating the arthritis is the best way to cope with the sleep disorder.Insomnia is not a single disorder. It is a general symptom and could have many potential causes. In order to qualify as a sleep disorder, insomnia has to meet three specific requirements. First, the person has to experience poor sleep in general, or have a problem falling or staying asleep. Second, if given the proper sleep environment and an adequate opportunity to sleep, the problem still occurs. Third, the result of the poor sleep causes some type of impairment while awake. Examples of an impairment are; fatigue, body aches and pains, inability to concentrate, mood changes, lack of energy, poor concentration, or developing an unnatural amount of worry about sleep.Often insomnia is treated with medication, such as sleeping pills. These can be prescription medication or bought over the counter. However, there are several other methods of treatment for this sleep disorder. Behavioral treatments include meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing, visualization, biofeedback, sleep hygiene, cognitive behavioral therapy and reconditioning sleep restriction. These methods are often very successful. Some sufferers of this sleep disorder choose holistic, or alternative, treatment. This method involves the use of herbal supplements which are not usually FDA approved. Others seek acupuncture as a way to relieve their insomnia. Passive body heating, which is the use of hot baths, is another method used.Understanding this sleep disorder is the first step to breaking the cycle of insomnia.
